Strategies for Implementing Diversity and Inclusion on a Construction Site

This case study addresses a construction company with primarily white employees executing a major construction project in neighborhoods where the population is primarily black. This situation places project team leaders in a position that calls for sensitivity toward diversity and inclusion as decisions are made during the execution of the project. How the project team responds with equitable practices and a sense of inclusion will determine how the community views the project. The case study addresses the selection of diversity and inclusion strategies in the development of a hiring program for the project and the development of a community engagement program. Three scenarios are presented: strategies for achievement of contract hiring requirements, strategies for achievement of company diversity hiring goals, and community engagement strategies.

Teaching Notes for the instructor are provided to assist in using the case study.  Instructors should send students the downloaded version rather than links to avoid student access to instructor notes.
